Jamey Aebersold. No other name is more associated with jazz and learning. I still remember the old books with vinyl records that included stereo tracks that would allow you to eliminate either the bass or drums. It allowed you to jam along imagining you were the best.
Of course today there are many great educators and as many great different books. And you can find them all at one great place: Jazzbooks.com. Seven pages devoted just to bass books. When I started the bass in jr. high, only a couple of standard books existed and all the titles would certainly fit on one page. And cello too! I managed to dig up a couple of jazz books just for cello on the website.
Play-alongs, theory, scales, you dream it up, I bet you can find it. Check it out. Cool, bebop, straight ahead or just plain blues. Whatever you feel, try it.
