Orchestra with Dr. Baird was a great experience for our students.  He taught them the basics of learning to play a string instrument and was able to help the students make significant growth from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. He held two concerts a year that allowed the students to showcase their new skills and were very appropriate for the age of the students involved.  –Brittany Gilson (former principal Wm Penn Elementary)

The Beginning:

I began piano lessons in grade school. I hated them so much I used to hide when it was time to go.  Later I came home from school and announced, "I am going to play the tuba!" I played tuba through college.

Double Bass:
I began playing jazz on first the electric bass then the double bass in high school. I have played in small combos--both vocal and instrumental--dance bands, and big bands gigging at both large and small venues. More recently I have gigged with the SLCC music faculty, the Archibald Quintet,  the Murray and West Jordan Symphonies, and various small events. Check out my pictures under Events tab. I play a six string fretless, a six string fretted electric bass, and a 1/2 size double bass by Engelhardt.

Cello

I began to play the 'cello as an adult pursuing my love of classical music (switching from the tuba).  Here in Utah I currently play the  'cello in the SLCC Chamber Orchestra and also the  the Taylorsville SLCC Community Orchestra. I also have played with the Wasatch Community Symphony Orchestra, American West Symphony and the West Valley Symphony. Starting in 2016 I have played in an interfaith production of Handel's Messiah. I have also participated in the ISU String Camp in Pocatello, ID and orchestra camps with the Utah Symphony. Check out my pictures under Events tab.

Baroque Piccolo Cello

In 2024 I bought a Jay Haide À L'ancienne Eurowood Piccolo Model cello. I am playing this cello in both the University of Utah Early Music Ensemble and my regular orchestras. I use Gamet gut strings for the Early Music Ensemble and Pirastro Eudoxa strings for my regular orchestra playing. (For the e string I use Gamet for early music and Larson original for all other playing.)

Viola da Gamba

I bought a Lu-Mi seven string gamba (after Bertrand) and began taking lessons from Dr. Kai-Wai Yu from Utah Tech University. I eventually began playing regularly in the University of Utah Early Music Ensemble. I use Pirastro Gamba gut strings and a Lu-Mi snakewood baroque gamba bow.

Teaching

In addition to teaching private students I have in the past taught elementary school orchestra, grades 4-6.  A member of the American String Teachers Association and The Federation of Music Clubs, I encourage my students to learn their instrument and musicianship through private lessons and recitals measured by accredited national standards.

I accept students 4th grade through adult, all levels from beginner to advanced on cello and bass. And I teach beginning violin, viola and guitar (classical/folk). Please see the lessons tab for more information.
